Fashion search platform Lyst has unveiled a forecast of the direction in which the world of haute couture will develop in 2020.
When compiling the forecast, data on more than 6 million products, 12,000 stores were analyzed, and activity in the global media and social networks for 2019 was taken into account. It is suggested that in 2020 high fashion will move to a new level. It will be influenced by various major events, such as space achievements, the Olympic Games and the US presidential election.
1. Space fashion
The world of space exploration is experiencing a new dawn, with reports of new achievements regularly appearing in the media, which is sure to have an impact on the world of high fashion. According to Lyst's forecast, all sorts of "space" motifs will begin to appear, like holographic inserts or outerwear that resembles space suits.
2. Japanese motifs
With Tokyo hosting the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer, analysts at Lyst are confident that this will have an impact on high fashion, which will begin to show various Japanese motifs. Research has shown that the world is experiencing a rise in interest in Japanese culture today, and online searches for Japanese brands increased by 8% in 2019.
3. Big bags
In 2019, the average bag size decreased by 40%. However, Lyst is confident that 2020 will see a return to the extra-large bag trend that dominated the 2000s. Well-known fashion magazines such as Harper's Bazaar and Elle agree with this, also predicting the return of tote bags and hobos. By the way, according to the NPD report, in 2019 consumers spent more money on expensive shoes than on handbags.
4. Political fashion
According to Lyst, we are entering a decade where politics will have a strong impact on the world of fashion, which will begin to "reflect global and cultural tensions." And the impetus for this will be the upcoming 2020 presidential election in the United States. The use of fashion as a means of political expression is nothing new, and in turbulent times this trend only intensifies.
