Amazon plans to open a new full-size grocery store in the Los Angeles area.
Not too many details are known yet. The posted job listings describe the new outlet as "Amazon's first grocery store" to be located in Woodland Hills County, California. It is scheduled to open in 2020 and will be located in the building where the Toys "R" Us store was once located. Amazon also told CNET that the store will not use the online cashless technology. Amazon Go. It looks like it will be promoted under a new separate sub-brand, but it is not yet known which one.
For the first time, the possibility of opening a new chain of grocery stores became known back in March of this year from the Wall Street Journal. Then it was reported that in these outlets it will be possible to purchase a “wide variety of products” at prices more affordable than in the Whole Foods supermarket chain (owned by Amazon since August 2017). However, the first stores of this new chain were expected to open in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Philadelphia. It is possible that this will happen later, the company has not yet announced anything about development plans.
Internet giant Amazon more and more "goes offline". After all, the new chain of stores will be the fourth in a row, in addition to Amazon Go, Amazon Books and Amazon 4-Star. The company's foothold in the grocery market will further intensify its competition with chains such as Walmart, Target and Kroger.
