Apple plans to create exclusive podcasts and compete with Spotify.
Apple today is very active in the creation and development of ever new services, whether it be news, streaming music or video. Naturally, the increasingly popular podcasts could not pass her attention.
The company first started doing podcasts back in 2005 - that's when they became available to iTunes users. Needless to say, the very word "podcast" comes from the merger of the words iPod and broadcasting. A dedicated podcast app has always been available to iOS users, and in 2019 an app for macOS should also be available. However, Apple Podcasts is actually just a directory of links for downloading podcasts from other platforms. Now we are talking about creating unique content that is inaccessible to competitors.
It is alleged that Apple is already actively engaged in negotiations with several media companies. True, it has not yet been revealed which ones. But it can be assumed that the first podcasts may appear by the end of this year.
All this is not the best news for Spotify. This company has already spent millions of dollars positioning itself as a great platform for listening and distributing podcasts. Only at the beginning of this year, it absorbed the Gimlet Media and Anchor services that worked in this direction. However, Apple, with its developed ecosystem, will be able to quickly lure many users from Spotify to its side - why use third-party solutions when there is a built-in one, moreover, available on all devices at once (MacBook, iPad, iPhone, Watch). The news has already caused Spotify's share price to drop by 2%.
