Tagline: We Try Harder
Corporate legend has it that during World War II, bomber pilot Warren Avis carried a motorcycle with him wherever he went, giving him freedom of movement when landing at any airport. In peacetime, having become an ordinary passenger, Avis lost this opportunity. Accustomed to the ability to drive around immediately after landing, the former pilot immediately noticed how difficult it was to find a taxi at a regular airport (and in the post-war years this was especially difficult, even in the United States). This is how the idea of creating a car rental company was born.
It all started with three cars that were rented at Willow Run Airport, located in the city of Ypsilanti, Michigan (Ypsilanti, Michigan, USA). It was 1946. Avis himself was surprised at how promising the business he started turned out to be. He quickly began to build momentum and by 1953 Avis Airlines Rent a Car Systems (as the company was originally called) became the second largest car rental company in the United States, behind only The Hertz Corporation.
In 1956, representative offices were opened in Europe, Mexico and Canada. Number of branches AVIS to date, it has exceeded 5,000 thousand worldwide. Most of them are franchised. The services provided have long gone beyond simple car rental, but include leasing, driver outsourcing and some other transportation services. Cars of various models are used (according to some estimates - more than 1500 different models of all classes).
