Introduced as a luxurious alternative to a plastic bag, the Portobello Tote went on sale for £785.
British luxury manufacturer of bags and accessories made of leather Mulberry has introduced the first model in its history, made in accordance with the program of sustainable development and respect for the environment. The Portobello Tote is presented as a luxurious yet smarter and more sustainable replacement for the traditional plastic bag for everyday shopping.
The model is made at the Mulberry plant in Somerset, England, which supports the carbon neutrality program. Special leather with a gold rating of environmental compliance was used in the production. The material itself is a by-product of the food industry, the fashion house said.
Today, about half of all Mulberry-branded products are made in a factory with high environmental standards, but it is Portobello Tote that is the first bag made from "golden eco-standard" leather and stitched with Epic EcoVerde thread, which is a recycled polyester fiber.
Designed with double handles and a functional shoulder strap, the bag can be worn on almost any comfortable part of the body. The Portobello Tote is available in a range of the house's signature colors as well as seasonal hues including chestnut, midnight, tangerine orange, Nordic blue and classic Mulberry Green.
“Our starting point for this model was an everyday item like a simple plastic bag – functional yet flashy. Portobello captures the great functionality of this design and transforms it into an elegant bag that is practical and, last but not least, made to last,” commented Thierry Andretta, CEO of Mulberry.
The creation of the bag is part of the Mulberry Green program, in which the brand is committed to creating a positive change in the impact of production on the environment. The company promises to send all proceeds from the sale of the bag to the World Land Trust, a charitable foundation that creates natural parks and reserves and ensures the constant protection of wildlife. In addition, Mulberry guarantees its customers a full range of product repair services to enable them to "revive, not replace their favorite bag." The new 100% eco-friendly model is now available from Mulberry's online retailer for around £795.
