Automotive concern Daimler has launched the production of Mercedes-Benz cars in Russia.
The official opening of the Muscovy plant took place on April 3, 2019. Production of cars for the Russian market will begin with the release of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan. In addition to the E-Class, the GLE, GLC and GLS SUV models will also be produced at a later date.
Mercedes-Benz Cars is investing more than 250 million euros in the plant. The term of the investment contract will be 9 years. More than a thousand employees will be involved in the production, half of which have already started work. The selection and training of the remaining workers will be completed in the near future, Daimler said. Factory employees were purposefully trained at existing Mercedes-Benz plants around the world. The specially created company Mercedes-Benz Manufacturing RUS is responsible for the production of cars for the Russian market.
Construction of the new plant, which was built in less than two years, began in 2017. Moskovia is located approximately 40 kilometers northwest of Moscow, in the Yesipovo industrial zone, on an area of 85 hectares. The new enterprise has been assigned tax benefits: until the end of 2025, the rate will be 0.%, from 2026 to 2028 - 10.%, and from 2029 - 13.%. The new plant is part of the global network of Mercedes-Benz production facilities, which includes more than 30 locations around the world.
With the launch of the production of Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, Daimler will continue to support the existing development strategy in the Russian market. The new capacity will be aimed at meeting strong local market demand for Mercedes-Benz E-class sedans and SUVs.
Production at the Mercedes-Benz Muscovy plant is characterized by the most modern and innovative technologies of the Industry 4.0 system, Daimler noted. Numerous environmentally friendly solutions have been applied in production, including electronic document management, all-electric forklifts and heat recovery in buildings.
Since 2013, Mercedes-Benz has been the best-selling premium car brand in Russia. Over the past ten years of presence in the market, the company has more than doubled sales of passenger cars.
