Consumers swapped Balenciaga clothes, Louis Vuitton shoes and Cartier watches.
Dior and Balenciaga are at the top of the prestigious list of the most popular brands of 2022 according to luxury retailer The RealReal. The site was in 2011 and has become one of the main global online platforms for the resale of luxury clothing, accessories and shoes.
Chanel and Louis Vuitton were named the most popular resale shoe brands, while Rolex and Cartier topped the list of watch brands, the study's authors said. Gucci Blondie was named bag of the year, and Telfar Clemens, Bode and Aimé Leon Dore were among the hottest young designers of the year.
Demand for vintage collectibles is reported to have increased over the past year by 439%. At the same time, consumers are paying more and more attention to environmental friendliness and responsible production.
“Since the start of the pandemic, more than 2X as many items originally purchased on The RealReal were sold on the platform again, proving that shopping to sell – and selling to shop – is becoming an increasingly popular way to reduce your fashion footprint and give items a second life,” the company said.
Millennials provide the bulk of resale deals. At the same time, things put up for sale by buzzers are sold the fastest. “…they are tapped into trends on social media and favor celebrity-backed luxury brands that take cues from streetwear. Overall, what we’re seeing is exploring new ways to shop, earn money and express their personal style – streetwear has been one of those avenues,” said Alex Tudela, manager of The RealReal.
