The jury of the World Car of the Year (WCOTY) competition recognized the compact Volkswagen ID.4 electric crossover as the winner.
This time, the Honda e electric car and the Toyota Yaris hybrid also reached the final of the event, with 742 and 732 points, respectively. But in the end, the first place went to the Volkswagen ID.4, which managed to get 798 points right away. However, Honda e still did not remain without an award, having managed to win the proud title of “Best Urban Car” (World Urban Car).
Based on the MEB platform, the Volkswagen ID.4 is the first electric car German branddesigned for the global market. This car is sold in various countries around the world and is available in various trim levels. The last time Volkswagen cars won the WCOTY competition was back in 2013 - then it was the 7th generation Golf, which just appeared on the market.

Other awards were given to the Porsche 911 Turbo for Sports Car of the Year and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class W223 for Luxury Car of the Year. The leader in the category for the best appearance was the all-wheel drive Land Rover Defender.
World Car of the Year appeared back in 2003 and has been held regularly since then, the first award was presented in January 2004. In order to take part in the competition, the car must be sold in at least 5 countries on two continents. The jury consists of professional automotive journalists from around the world. This year it included 93 people from 28 countries.
Initially, there could only be one winner in the competition, but later it was decided to add all kinds of categories as well. At the same time, at first, electric vehicles and hybrids were allocated to a separate "green" category, which in 2020 it was decided to abolish due to significant an increase in the number similar technology. Needless to say, in 2021, 2 out of 5 winners are electric vehicles.
