Kent Walker, vice president of Google. He believes that now the market has developed a situation where patents do more harm than good.
In many ways, this is true - endless litigation in no way helps the development of the industry, but to a large extent slows it down. For many companies, all this has already become an additional source of income. Aptly dubbed "patent trolls," they regularly try to sue large sums from other companies, accusing them of infringing certain patents. Lawyers also want to make good money and they are only delighted with the current situation.
But against the background of the recent history of the purchase of patents by the bankrupt Nortel, the words of a Google representative sound only like disappointment that his company was not able to snatch its piece, losing to the alliance Apple и Microsoft. And since all three companies are now struggling in the smartphone market, such a loss for Google extremely unpleasant, because competitors now have serious trump cards in their hands.
So if we lose in the fight for patents, we will fight against the existing patent system.
