One of the largest Chinese car manufacturers and the country's largest private company operating in this field. Great Wall Motor founded in 1976 in the city of Baoding, which is located in the province of Hebei (Baoding, Hebei, China), where to this day its head office is located.
GWM started as a small company (originally its full name looked like Baoding Great Wall Automobile Company), which produces miniature trucks, but over time turned into a holding of almost two dozen companies, some of which are engaged in the assembly of cars, and the rest in the production of components. In 1998 GWM becomes the largest pickup truck manufacturer in the Middle Kingdom, holding this title to this day.

In 2003 GWM became the first non-state automobile manufacturer whose shares are traded on the Hong Kong stock exchange. A August 28, 2004 Great Wall Motor ranked among the top 500 companies in the country.
For a long time the company worked exclusively for the domestic market. The first export delivery took place on October 12, 1997.
