In our latitudes the company holden few people know. And it is not surprising, because this automaker is from Australia and works almost exclusively for the domestic market.
Foundation date holden 1856 is considered to be the year the company was founded JA Holden and Co., named after the founder - James Alexander Holden, a native of England, who immigrated to another hemisphere a few years earlier. It took place in Adelaide (Adelaide, Australia) - the capital of the state of South Australia.
The company was originally engaged in various equipment, so it is not surprising that by the beginning of the twentieth century, its management was interested in such a promising innovation as a car. However, at first it was possible to establish only the production of spare parts for cars and motorcycles. Somewhat later, in 1919, production was expanded to the production of car bodies of their own design, which were installed on the chassis of other manufacturers. Basically these were Chevrolet from General Motors. In connection with the change of the main activity, the name was changed to Holden's Motor Body Builders Ltd. or just HMBB. Cars were produced under the brand holden.
Affairs HMBB were doing well when the company was taken over in 1931 General Motors, with education General Motors-Holden's Ltd. It still exists under this name to this day.

Some time after the takeover, the company continued its activities - creating cases of its own design and putting them on the basis of GM. Chassis from brands such as Chevrolet, Pontiac и Buick. The design has been adapted for difficult Australian conditions.
50s of the last century holden reigned in the automotive market in Australia, capturing it by more than half. The company's products were distinguished by an acceptable price and good quality, which ensured high sales. Production capacities have been expanded.

The era of prosperity ended in the 60s, when Australia became the object of close attention of other American manufacturers, among which the most aggressive was Ford. The Japanese also pulled up. At the same time holden distinguished himself by introducing the V8 model, fully developed by the company's engineers. However, most of the models still continued to be assembled on the chassis of other brands. GM.
The following decades passed with mixed success. However, a significant part of the market was lost forever. And if in the 90s it was still possible to keep about 28% of the market, then by the beginning of the new century, the share holden reduced to 15%. The company moved to second place, lost leadership in Australia Toyota.
Today holden continues the same activity. Produced mainly cars based on Opel и Daewoo. Some models are based on the same Chevrolet.
