The last mile is delivered by electric cars.
The French division of IKEA decided on an unusual experiment to support the development of sustainable initiatives in European markets. IKEA now delivers orders to residents of Paris by the river.
IKEA containers are shipped along the Seine from a warehouse 9 km away from the capital. The couriers make the last mile using electric cars to minimize the carbon footprint of their deliveries.
"We offer your parcels a cruise!" the inscription on board the containers of IKEA goods that are transported to Paris along the Seine. The Swedish giant's partner in the project is Box2Home.
The company notes that by using water transport instead of classical delivery by automobile roads, it will be possible to reduce the volume of harmful emissions five times, and cars will reduce the traffic on the streets of the French capital by 300,000 km a year.
