Today, the 50% of the materials used by Adidas in the creation of its many and varied products is plastic.
The company announced its intention to completely switch to production using only recycled plastic. This should happen by 2024.
So far, the fashion industry as a whole has lagged behind the growing demand for environmentally responsible fashion. This idea was picked up mainly by niche brands, like Patagonia, Everlane, Rothy's, Toad & Co and Eileen Fisher. However, really large and popular manufacturers have not yet particularly supported this trend. But that could all change with the announcement of a major player like Adidas, which ranks 3rd in global sales in the Apparel & Accessories category on Forbes' list of the world's largest public companies (1st and 2nd place went to Christian Dior и Nike, respectively).
Decision Adidas follows initial success selling shoes made from recycled materials. Its sales have grown from 1 million pairs in 2017 to 5 million in 2018, which means over 40 tons of plastic waste has been recycled. This year, the figure is expected to be 11 million.
To say that the problem of plastic pollution is already very acute is to say nothing. Unfortunately, the measures taken to solve it, so far, are frankly insignificant. However, consumers are becoming more environmentally responsible, which cannot but affect manufacturers large and small, who are increasingly striving to make their products more and more “green”. And it is gratifying that such "monsters" as Adidas are also connected to this.
