By early 1917, engineer and inventor Henry M. Leland left the company he had once founded. Cadillac, which has belonged to General Motors. The reason for leaving was very prosaic. In Europe, the First World War was in full swing, which promised to bring a solid jackpot to any company that starts trading with the warring parties. Yes, here is William C. Durant, founder GM, was a staunch pacifist and did not want to profit from the bloodshed. After a heated debate, Henry Leland decided to leave his former offspring, in which he was the chief executive.
And immediately started a new company. Henry was a true patriot, for he named his new creation in honor of Abraham Lincoln (Abraham Lincoln), the 16th President of the United States. So in 1917 appeared Lincoln Motor Company, which was engaged in the production of engines for military aircraft.
But apparently, for all his merits, Henry Leland was a completely useless businessman, because after some five years, on February 4, 1922, this company also passed into the wrong hands. This time she got swallowed up Ford Motor Company. The main reason for this deal was the end of the war - Lincoln she simply failed to adapt to civilian life after she lost military orders, although mass production of luxury cars was launched (the first model was the Lincoln L, which appeared in 1920).
It seems that the acquisition went to the brand only benefit. Somehow it is hard to believe that she would have managed to survive the Great Depression on her own, when the demand for super-expensive luxury cars was greatly reduced. As for Henry Leland, he, again, remained at the helm of his once company, having lived until 1932.
