Now it’s hard to imagine, but this Japanese company began its history by producing various cork crafts. The enterprise began its activity in 1920, headed by Yujiro Matsuda, who came from not the richest segments of the population, the son of a fisherman. Then it was called Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd. A little later, just Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd. - word Cork ("cork") it was decided to remove, because by 1927 the range of products was significantly expanded.
Now one can only guess what exactly prompted Matsuda in 1930 to start producing motorcycles. Most likely, this mode of transport was very popular in a country where most of the population barely made ends meet. First time branded motorcycles Toyo Kogyo did not sell well. Until 1937, when one of these models won the motorcycle race. Winning races has always been the best advertisement for vehicles. Sales volumes increased sharply.

And, most importantly, it is very similar to the name of the founder. By the way, you can often hear the version that Mazda - this is a broken spelling of the surname "Matsuda". Toyo Kogyo Ltd. expanded the range of vehicles to include also cargo tricycles and small three-wheeled trucks, also very popular in Japan of those years (companies such as Mitsubishi и Daihatsu). They went down in history under the name Mazda-go.
The outbreak of World War II had a positive impact on the development of the company, which was engaged in the production of rifles for the imperial army. After the defeat of Japan Toyo Kogyo Ltd. again have to start all over again, returning to motorcycles.

Since 1964 cars Mazda exported to other countries.
Since 1984 the company Toyo Kogyo Ltd. called Mazda Motor Corporation. A significant part of its shares by that time already belonged to the American Ford Motor, cooperation with which greatly influenced the further development of the Japanese company.
