British manufacturer of once very popular sports cars. The company began its journey as a small car dealership, grew to the level of a real legend, and then went into oblivion. And although it has been revived, so far there is not even a hint that it will be possible to achieve previous successes.
The history of the brand began in the 20s, in Oxford. Initially, it was a dealership that sold cars to a very successful British company in those years. Morris Motor Company. The idea to improve them on their own arose later - in 1923 it was proposed by Cecil Kimber, a sales manager. Apparently this seemed tempting and a little later Cecil led a small production of a small sports car based on Morris Minor cars (later, cars of his own design would begin to be produced). In 1924, the world learned about the appearance Morris Garage or abbreviated MG (according to other information, this happened in 1925). In 1929, the young company moves to Abington and takes the name M.G. Car Company. Small, nimble and easy to drive cars quickly won the hearts of consumers. Wherein MG were quite affordable. Sales were organized in an interesting way - anyone could just come and buy a brand new one MGwithout resorting to the services of dealers. It was the first decades of its existence that the company created those models that eventually made it a real legend of that time. It is also believed that everything went smoothly while Cecil set the tone, but after his dismissal in 1941 MG began its gradual path to sunset.
Cars MG became regular winners of various competitions, first in Europe, then in the USA. The company was actively engaged in setting new speed records, having achieved a lot in this field.
MG TD (1950-1953) |
In 1950 MG together with Aston Martin joined the british motor corporation (BMC). The next decade was very successful for the company. In 1966 to BMC also joins Jaguar Cars, resulting in the formation british motor holdings. And two years later, he also joins Leyland Motor Corporation, as a result of which the holding receives the name british leyland motor corporation (BLMC). But all these re-trubations did not have a very good effect on the development MG. In 1968, the production of cars under this brand was discontinued.
Everything was ruined by the Japanese, who began to introduce small sports cars on the market, which were distinguished by better design and much higher quality. After all, frankly speaking, MG have never been known for being overly reliable.
MG MGA (1955-1962) |
And the rebirth of the holding, which included MG, continued. In 1975 BLMC reduced to BL (British Leyland). In 1982, the rights to the brand MG transferred to the subsidiary Austin Rover Group (ARG), there was a decision to revive the once popular brand. New cars MG, although they were sporty, were not much like the previous ones (primarily in that they had hatchback-type bodies, and not a traditional coupe). They are not very interested in consumers. In 1994 ARG goes to bmw, which eventually regretted this acquisition, since it entailed only costs.
In 2000, the Germans sold all the factories that once belonged to ARG, companies Phoenix Consortium (there is a legend that the deal amounted to a symbolic one pound), as a result of which the company appeared MG Rover Group, which went down in history as the last British car manufacturer. In 2005, it was bought by a Chinese company Nanjing Automobile Groupwho decided to breathe new life into the long-suffering MGwhat about the brand Rover, it was resold to the company Ford.
