Apple has patented smartwatch strap technology with "electrochromic properties. According to the manufacturer, the new straps will be able to take on "different colors and color combinations" to match the wearer's clothing. In addition, the strap will change color to inform the user of information.
"Users may wish to be able to customize their watch bands to express variety and style. For example, a user may wish for a watch strap in a specific color based on clothing choices, other wearables, surroundings or other preferences," the release to the patent notes.
Experts note that Apple wants to save its customers money. Instead of experimenting with different straps suitable for different clothes, now it will be enough to get just one. Although it is still an open question, what will be its price?
As for the technical component of the new development, it is known that some or all of the threads of the strap will have electrochromic properties due to the connection with the conductor. The patent for the new technology was obtained by the inventors, who previously worked on the research of touch fabrics for the future HomePod.
"Color choices can be made and adjusted without removing or changing the watch band. Accordingly, different colors can be displayed at different times without requiring different straps for each color or color combination," Apple commented.
