The Wikimedia Foundation is in need of a new visual identity, which will be created by a well-known Norwegian design agency.
Architecture and landscape design firm Snøhetta, which specializes in interior design and corporate identity, will partner with the non-profit organization Wikimedia Foundation to create a new visual identity for the brand. It is expected that the main idea of the new style will be based on the main principle of Wikipedia - to make knowledge free.
Representatives of the Wikimedia Foundation are afraid that the name and style of the organization used today is not very clear to many people, which hinders the development of the project and negatively affects its potential. Therefore, it makes sense to shift the focus to the much more famous and familiar name "Wikipedia", which should make it easier to further promote new projects.
It is important to note that Snøhetta will work not only with the organization, but also with volunteers who actively contribute to the development of Wikipedia. During the first half of 2020, company representatives will personally meet with volunteers to listen to their opinion and get advice. Based on the data received, a new design will be developed, which will be offered for evaluation by the entire free encyclopedia community. Everyone can share their opinion, leave a comment. This will help guide the progress of the project, which is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2020.
The history of Wikipedia began in 2001. Today it is one of the most visited Internet resources, which is visited by at least one and a half billion users every month. In addition to the encyclopedia, the activities of the Wikimedia Foundation include several other projects, such as Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikinews, and a number of others.
As for Snøhetta, this design agency started in 1987. Initially, it was planned to deal only with architecture and landscape design. But later the scope of activity was expanded, it also included graphic design and other areas. The company participated in the creation of many interesting projects, such as the new Library of Alexandria in Egypt, the Norwegian National Opera in Oslo, and was developing new banknotes for the Norwegian Bank. According to the Wikimedia Foundation, they chose Snøhetta because of her "experience in creating everything from libraries to national park identities".
