Founded by one of the founders of Android, the smartphone brand that has managed to introduce only one model has changed hands.
It became known that the transaction for the sale of the Essential brand, the new owner of which was the newly organized startup Nothing, was completed in January 2021, while the application for the transfer of rights was filed in November 2020. All attributes of the brand, including including logo, trademark, etc.
Tech startup Nothing was created by one of the founders of the Chinese smartphone manufacturer One Plus Carl Pei. The establishment of the enterprise was announced in January 2021, and among the products that the company plans to release, various “smart” devices were named, but no exact plans have been disclosed yet.
In turn, Essential is the brainchild of Andy Rubin, one of the creators of the Android operating system. In its three-year history, the Essential brand has only introduced one smartphone model, the Essential Phone, but sales were so low that the company ceased to exist in early 2020. Plans to create another smartphone model - Project Gem - and smart home platforms were in the works, but none of the projects came to fruition.
Now the rights to the brand name belong to Nothing Technologies and it is likely that it will also be used for any model or line of smartphones. Although the acquisition of the brand does not mean that the company will enter the smartphone market in the near future, it may signal rather distant plans. No official information about how exactly the brand will be used has yet been received. In the near future, the company plans to announce new products and development plans, apparently at the same time it will announce the use of the Essential brand.
