But on its basis, they created a much simpler and cheaper model 360. In 1958, it was put into production and produced for 11 years, becoming a real Japanese bestseller (six hundred were sold in the first year alone). Thus, a new brand was born. Word Subaru translated from Japanese as "Pleiades". The name comes from Kenji Kita, the then president of the company.

In those years, at a company as tiny as the Subaru 360, no one even thought about how many victories their subsequent products would win in rally racing.
