American electric car manufacturer Tesla showed off its new Model Y SUV at a presentation in Los Angeles.
An application for pre-ordering a car can already be left on the company's website. According to Elon Musk, the new car will have the appearance and functionality of an SUV and the driving performance of a sports car.
The maximum capacity of the new SUV is 7 people. Without additional recharging, a Tesla Model Y car in the cheapest Standard Range configuration can travel up to 480 kilometers. The model in the most expensive Performance package can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (96.5 km/h) in 3.5 seconds and has a top speed of about 240 km/h.
It is reported that the new Model Y SUV in the basic configuration will go on sale in the spring of 2021 and will cost $39,000, while the top-end Model Y Performance variant, costing $60,000, will be available in the fall of 2020.
Model Y became the fifth electric vehicle in the Tesla lineup and the second crossover in the American company's lineup. Elon Musk previously tweeted that the Model Y will be "about 10% bigger and 10% more expensive than the Model 3." The electric car will run on almost the same platform as the Model 3, but with less range when using a standard battery. The battery charge for Model Y in the basic configuration will be enough for 500 km of distance, and in the Performance version - for 550 km of travel.
To date Tesla operates a single plant in Fremont, California, which is operating at full capacity. In China, in the Lingang industrial zone in the suburbs of Shanghai, the construction of the first factory for the production of electric cars outside the United States is underway. It is expected that the annual production volume will be up to 500,000 vehicles. By 2020, the production of Model 3 sedans will also be launched here.
