The reason for the changes in the design of the famous cylinders is the difficulty with their subsequent processing.
Chips Pringles are among the most popular, and their cylindrical metal can is recognized on store shelves by customers around the world. However, according to the UK Recycling Association, Pringles banks are a "nightmare" for environmentalists. The head of the organization, Simon Ellin, back in 2017, called for changes in packaging design, saying that the complex metal structure of the can is almost impossible to separate into separate parts for recycling.
Finally, after months of testing, Kellogg's, which acquired the Pringles brand from Procter & Gamble in 2012, says it's ready to introduce a new can for its chips. Its design will be simpler and more accessible for processing. The first samples of the new packaging are already on sale in some Tesco stores, so the company will be able to assess the reaction of customers.
The new cans on the 90% are made of paper. About 10% makes up a layer of plastic that protects the chips from air and moisture. As for the lid, two options are being tested - made of plastic and paper. Both of them, according to the manufacturer, when opened will produce the legendary cotton, which has been used more than once in advertising chips.
However, according to the Recycling Association, a plastic lid is not a good solution. After all, most of these covers will simply be thrown away, sometimes right in nature after picnics, which will only increase the problem of environmental plastic pollution. At the same time, according to environmental experts, although such minimal steps as changing the design of cans are not able to solve global environmental problems, they make their contribution and set an example for other manufacturers.
