Some Australian McDonald's will temporarily change their name. This is an unprecedented event in the history of the famous fast food chain.
Starting January 8, the 13 largest restaurants will be called Macca's - this is how most Australians call the famous network among themselves (according to research, about 55% of the population). The renaming will be timed to coincide with Australia Day on January 26th. With the onset of February, all restaurants will be called again McDonald's.
The organizers of the action with the renaming emphasize with particular pride that Australia is the only country in the world where McDonald's is called Macca's. It has become something of a local color.
The first McDonald's in Australia opened in 1971 in Sydney.
