Most of this equipment is huge and sometimes weighs more than one hundred tons. For example, the “small” Bucyrus 182M single-bucket excavator is able to scoop up to 18 cubic meters of soil with its bucket at a time. In addition to equipment, the company also provides various services, mainly related to employee training and OEM support for its equipment.
The company was founded in 1880 in Bucyrus, Ohio, USA. As you can see, its founders were not too philosophic with the name (as soon as they don’t distort it with us - Baytsirus, Busyrus, Basyrus, Batyrus, Basyrus). In 1893, the company moved to South Milwaukee, Wisconsin (South Milwaukee, Wisconsin), where it remains to this day. In those years, its full name looked like this: Bucyrus Steam Shovel and Dredge Co. The company was one of the first to deal with earth-moving machines, then still steam-powered. Things went well and the company quickly got back on its feet.
The company has something to brag about - in 1914, the construction of the Panama Canal was completed, the creation of which was called one of the most difficult construction projects of the first half of the 20th century. Technology has played a huge role in this. Bucyrus - 77 excavators manufactured by this company were used.
For its history Bucyrus made more than one acquisition. So in 1927 there was a merger with Erie Steam Shovel Company, also producing excavators. As a result, the name of the company changed for some time to Bucyrus-Erie. And with the acquisition in 1930 of the English Gruppe Ruston & Hornsby Ltd.opened access to the international market.
The takeover of the company deserves special mention. Marion Power Shovel Company - main competitor Bucyrus for over a hundred years. It happened in 1997. This deal allowed Bucyrus become the largest manufacturer in its field.
