The world is now experiencing the birth of a smartphone market with folding screens. So far, only one model has been presented for sale - Samsung Fold.
Also in the foreseeable future should appear and solution from Huawei. And now it became known that Google is also considering creating its own model of a smartphone with a folding screen.
Mario Queiroz, head of smartphone development at Pixel, told CNET that the company has been working in this direction for a long time and creating prototypes of devices with a folding screen. However, there is still no final understanding of what exactly such devices can be used for, what new they can offer the user, except for the increased screen diagonal. According to Keyroz, upon seeing such a device, the user should immediately understand that this is exactly what he needs. That is, the reason for the purchase should not be fashion, but the innovative capabilities of the new device.
So far, the market for folding smartphones has developed an incomprehensible situation. First Samsung's attempt was unsuccessful, the company had to recall smartphones due to technical problems that arose specifically with folding screens. As for Huawei, the company's device should appear towards the end of this year.
And while there have been rave reviews online from users who have tried the Samsung Fold in action and evaluate the new technology, in general, consumers are quite wary. And it's not just the very high cost of folding devices. Keyroz is absolutely right when he says that at this stage, folding screens are technology for the sake of technology. Well, apart from an increased diagonal with a smaller folded case, such devices cannot yet offer anything. But maybe it's Google that can come up with a really interesting idea.
By the way, judging by some recent patents, Apple company is also working on a project for such a folding device. So, a patent was recently received for a special design of the hinge. However, the company is not going to release a foldable iPhone before 2020.
