All models CLIE worked under the control Palm OS (Garnet OS) from version 3.5 to version 5.2. It was these models that made high-resolution color screens and advanced multimedia features familiar in this area. Thanks to Sony CLIE, PalmOS, which never shone in terms of multimedia, got a second wind. Some models were equipped with QWERTY keyboards. The first models were built using processors Dragonball companies Motorola, and since 2002 there has been a migration to ARM processors.

In total, a little over a dozen series were released, some of which were sold exclusively in Japan.
The gradual extinction of the PDA as a species led to the cessation of the production of handhelds CLIE. But they are still supported.
