Compact and not too expensive crossover produced by the German manufacturer Volkswagen. Sometimes such models are called light SUVs, although their cross-country ability is not much higher than that of a conventional passenger car. The buyer is offered both all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive versions Tiguan.
For the first time this car was presented to the public in 2007 at the Frankfurt Motor Show (the concept was shown a year earlier). The model went on sale in 2008. The name Tiguan is derived from the "crossing" of words "tiger" и "iguana". The car was originally expected to be named Samum, in honor of the sultry wind of the desert. Especially against the background of the fact that the company already has "windy" models - Passat, Scirocco, Eos. However, the name chosen as a result is quite successful, even despite the fact that it combines such different animals. In any case, it is sonorous, easy to remember and write (for example, the word Touareg these matters are somewhat more complicated).
Sometimes you can hear the opinion that creating a "SUV" Chery Tiggo, the Chinese took as a basis for copying precisely Tiguan. This is not true - Tiggo appeared earlier. And the Chinese did not have to wait for creation Volkswagen, since there are more than enough cars that can serve as originals.
