The history of this French manufacturer of portable electronics began in 1988. The company was founded by someone Henri Crohas. The official legend says that the name Archos (read as arcus) is an anagram of the founder's surname and, at the same time, the Greek word "αρχος" – "master".
Most of all, the company is known as a manufacturer of audio players with capacious drives - Archos was one of the first to start producing players with a hard disk as a storage medium. But, having a number of advantages, these devices have not been able to seriously compete with the iPod, which came to the market a little later. The reason is often cited as the exceptional appearance of the "apple" device. Solutions from Archos, which surpassed it technically (for example, it was possible to connect external media), did not differ in such elegance.

In 2002 Archos introduces a new term, which later became quite popular. This is PMP – Portable Media Player ("portable media player"). This abbreviation arose in connection with the need to characterize the company's products. Subsequently, it is born PVP - Portable Video Player.
To date, the range of products manufactured by the company also includes various Internet tablets that work both under Windows 7 and under Google Android. Many of them use hard drives, which gives the user the opportunity to work with huge amounts of information. These devices are often referred to as portable entertainment centers. Some of them are capable of receiving a television signal.
The company also developed a phone model, presented at the beginning of 2010 - Phone Tablet. Then the founder of the company said that the model will go on sale only if it is possible to agree with the operators. Apparently, this has not been possible.
The company entered the Russian market in 1998. Initially, it supplied the market only with various computer peripherals. Sales of multimedia devices began a little later - after adapting them to the Russian language.

Main market Archos — Europe. However, the company's products are also available in the United States, where they are supplied under the brand name PocketDish and are delivered in packages of a TV operator Dish Network Corp., which since 2004 has been the owner of a fifth of the shares Archos.
The company also owns the brand Arnova, under which tablet computers are produced, not very productive and with little functionality, but well-assembled and inexpensive. This is a product from the lower segment of this market.
